Housing Rentals Off Base for 29 Palms

Should I rent housing at Twentynine Palms? There are many home rentals for military in the area. The BAH Basic Allowance for Housing at 29 Palms is zip 92278. Many take advantage of the opportunity to buy a home at this base because the housing is much more affordable than many other places around the country. There are some beautiful homes and neighborhoods in the 29 Palms valley, Joshua Tree, and Yucca Valley area. Many Marine Corps families choose to come back and retire there because of the quiet lifestyle. That being said, do your due diligence and check the local paper, The Desert Trail, publishes all of the Sheriff’s calls (not online, in the paper version only). Check it out for yourself. If you are committed to buying, research where the Sheriff’s calls go on a regular basis and avoid those areas.

Utility Costs

Remember that utilities in California are spendy. It is not uncommon to have a $300 electric bill in the summer. And do your research. A swamp cooler is not air conditioning. Swamp coolers are cheaper to run because they emit small particles of water into the air to cool it down (water vapor). This type of system can fail June through August because it is over 90 degrees Fahrenheit when there is high humidity. Houses out in town typically have both types of systems, so ask questions and make sure you get the house that best suits you.

Popular military rental cities outside of 29 Palms Marine Corps Base

Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley:

Many spouses are daunted by the small town feel of 29 Palms and the lack of resources in town. That’s why they choose to move to Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley for more amenities at their fingertips. Yes, there are things that aren’t great about not having the resources, but your biggest resource, other military wives, generally don’t live in those areas. It is much harder to make friends in the area or commute the 20-30 minutes to get to 29 Palms to meet up with other gals. Most everyone we know who started out living in Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley eventually moved on base. You will miss out on the close-knit community events living further away.

Twentynine Palms Military Base Housing

Living in a neighborhood on base is great and it is highly recommended! The housing on base is nice, utilities are included, within the new “allotted use” systems and friends are right next door. We are served by Lincoln Military. We have a lot of pools on the Marine Corps base here and many activities are hosted as well. We have a pretty good children’s sports program, sponsored get togethers, base movie theater, and more. Of course living on base always has its own set of problems, which are consistent with every other base in the Marine Corps.

What is great when your spouse is deployed is that many other spouses’ husbands are deployed as well. It’s great to share play dates, dining out, taking a trip ‘down the hill’ to Palm Springs. Those friendships will flourish with the other ladies on base. Guaranteed! Please note that no washers or dryers come with any housing unit.

Officer Housing

Ocotillo Heights Neighborhood Military Housing: These homes range from 2-5 bedrooms homes and are located at the back gate by the golf course. This is a pet friendly community but depending on what street you live on, you may only be allowed one pet.

Enlisted Housing

Adobe Flats Neighborhood Military Housing: Click to view Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. These neighborhoods are all grouped together by the rear condor gate. You have close access to the main gate, commissary, walking distance to Condor elementary, the family pool and base community center.

Condor Heights Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans.This housing is located right next to Condor Elementary. There are no garages with this housing.

Desert View Terrace Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. Click for Housing Photos Maps and Floorplans. This is older housing and is closer to the Naval Hospital.

Fairway Heights Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. This is older housing located near golf course and back gate. It is very close to the large Lincoln Community Center.

Joshua Heights Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. E5-E9. There are 3 and 4 bedrooms. Nice houses, newer.

Marine Palms Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. E5-E9. These are 3 bedrooms with one car garages. This is newer housing.

Ocotillo Heights Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. These homes are 3-4 bedrooms and is SNCO Housing. This is located next to the back gate and very close to the large Lincoln Community Center.

Shadow Mountain Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. E6-E9. 4 bedrooms. These are nice houses, never.

Sunflower Terrace Neighborhood Military Housing: Click for Housing Map, Housing Photos and Housing Floor plans. E1-E3. 2 bedrooms. Older housing and is very close to Condor Elementary.

Vista Del Sol or 801 Housing: Click on the link to view military housing photos, maps and floorplans. This housing is approximately three miles off base. Lincoln began maintaining the contract for this base housing in April 2010. Some of the housing in 801 only has swamp coolers and will not work well to keep your house cool in the summer. This will most likely change once Lincoln takes over. Make sure you do your research and decide what is important to you. This housing is on Two Mile Road between Utah Trails and Adobe.
