Marine Corps Base Schools and School Districts

How are the schools at 29 Palms Marine Corps Base? The education system and other kids that your kids will go to school are not the best.  Many parents who live in Twentynine Palms choose to home school their older children because of the problems they’ve encountered. Note, there are other elementary schools, but these are the schools your child will go to if you live on base.

As a side note, the elementary schools in 29 aren’t so much the problem as the Junior High and High School.  Make the most of the education your child gets when you get here: meet your children’s teachers and be proactive to make the best of your experiences.

Independent Continuing Education (ICE) Program

ICE’s goal is to cater to the military family who is home schooling and/or has their child in an Independent Study situation. One of the issues we help with in particular is “credit recovery.” Many High Schoolers (9 – 12) lose credits when they transfer because California does not accept all credits all the time. It doesn’t happen to all, but just enough kids for us to really focus on making sure those kids who are affected by a military move are still able to graduate on time. They also work with 1 – 8 home schoolers. They are a “within the system” group that believes going outside of the system is a viable educational alternative for many families.

Pre-K and After School Programs:

Little School of the Desert: 18 mo-5 years. Christian daycare, Pre-K and Kindergarten. Mixed reviews.

Knott Sky Park: 2-6 years. Private Pre-K and Kindergarten. More recommended than Little School.

Condor Elementary School

’14-15 School Accountability Report Card 70-75% proficiency rating, 2% suspension rate, 0 expulsions. If you are enlisted and live on base, your child will more than likely go to Condor Elementary. This school is on base, but know that kids who live out in town also go to this school. This school has a reputation for being one of the better schools in the area.

29 Palms Elementary School

’14-15 School Accountability Report Card 59-67% proficiency rating, 45 suspensions, 1 expulsion. All officer housing and enlisted housing in Ocotillo Heights as well as Fairway Heights will go to this school. This school is off base. This school has a reputation for being one of the better elementary schools in the area. All 801 housing goes to this school as well.

29 Palms Junior High School

’14-15 School Accountability Report Card 50-63% proficiency rating, 25% suspension rate, 3 expulsions. There tends to be bullying and a negative learning environment. I’ve heard several times that the kids from out in town whose parents don’t enforce positive behavior tend to be a negative influence on children overall. I’ve heard others describe it as a hip-hop video environment. Many choose to go the distance learning route through the schools.

29 Palms High School

’14-15 School Unaccountably Report Card 29-59% proficiency rating, 102 suspensions, 7 expulsions. 91.7% graduation rate. They haven’t Adequate Yearly Progress provisions (because they are considered failing by the Federal Government). There tends to be bullying and a negative learning environment. I’ve heard several times that the kids from out in town whose parents don’t enforce positive behavior tend to be a negative influence on children overall. Many choose to go the distance learning route through the schools.
