Housing Rentals Off Base for Cherry Point

The BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing zip 28533) is good here if you want to consider living out in town. Many officers choose to live off base because the boundaries for schools are split between enlisted and officer housing and consequently, the officer housing schools are not very good. Costs have risen over the past year, but are still affordable to live off base. We do have cold winters and hot summers, so plan on budgeting $200 during those times. Spring and fall are more temperate, you could see utility bills as low as $100.

Popular Rental Cities Outside of Cherry Point Marine Corps Base

New Bern and Morehead City

Many spouses are daunted by the small town feel of Havelock and the lack of resources in town. That’s why they choose to move to New Bern or Morehead City to have amenities at their fingertips. It is about a 20-30 minute commute to Cherry Point from each city. Both cities are beautiful and have affordable housing. New Bern has a historic downtown and beautiful waterfronts. Morehead City is a beach town with lots to do. The only problem is that you don’t have the base resources easily acceptable. The schools tend to be better in New Bern and Morehead City.

Cherry Point Military Base Housing

Is currently under a very slow renovation. E-5 and below housing is completed and very nice. SNCO and Officer’s housing are still in the process of renovation. The housing allowance (BAH) is really high for SNCO’s and Officers, which is why most of those ranks choose to live out in town. Base housing for those ranks are about half occupied, so getting a house shouldn’t be an issue if that is what you’d like to do. However, that could change when the renovations are complete. Of course living on base always has its own set of problems, which are consistent with every other base in the Marine Corps.
