GETTING TO AND FROM   |   LINKS

Commissary: Closed on Mondays. It usually has a good supply of items. They just added self checkout lanes which is great because usually they only have 2 checkers working, so expect to wait in the checkout lines on paydays. Wal-Mart has taken away a lot of the commissary’s business because they offer more variety and fresher fruit and vegetables. However, the commissary still provides you a cheaper grocery bill in the end.

Exchange: We have a pretty good exchange and it recently went under a renovation. There’s a great selection of electronics and the uniform store is now attached for added convenience.

Home Store: Across the street from the Exchange. It has a variety of things including decorations, furniture, washers and dryers. North Carolina is the furniture capital of the United States. So if you’re looking for a bargain, in Havelock alone, there are about 10 stores always willing to give you a deal. Our best advice, shop around for the best price.

Base Events: This base is great about planning things for spouses and your family.

Bowling Alley: Great place to take the family. They have a great and inexpensive lunch/dinner menu. Weekend nights are very busy, good luck getting in!  Dine at the 11th Frame Grill inside.

Movie Theater: Great movie theatre and food. $1 admission kids $2 adults. Tuesday nights are always free! They have a great kiddie combo meal. Popcorn, drink and candy for $2.50.

Sounds of Freedom Golf Course: Created in a natural setting with views of the Neuse River. It is very inexpensive: 18 holes is approximately $20 including cart. There’s a golf pro on staff as well. Wings Grill is located in the pro-house and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Semper Fit:  The Devil Dog Gym is small, but has updated machines with lots of treadmills, elliptical machines and weight machines to choose from. The gym is scheduled to undergo renovation in the next few years. The Fitness Connection offers a wide variety of aerobics classes and dependants are charged $3 a class. Semper Fit also provides great personal trainers, health classes and fun runs; again, there is a fee for dependants.

ITT Ticket Office: Located by the home store. The manager and assistants are very nice, knowledgeable, and always willing to help. It’s a great resource for finding things to do in the Havelock, New Bern, Morehead City and Beaufort area.

Pelican Point Marina: Kayak and canoe rentals are available with free personal floating devices, anchors, etc.  Find information for renting out the Hancock & Slocom Lodge for events on the river.

Pools: There are 3 pools on base run by MCCS aboard Cherry Point. Currently the olympic size indoor pool is closed for renovations but should be reopening sometime in Fall, 2009. When it reopens, it should be on the same schedule; offering year-round recreation but closed on Mondays. The other two outdoor pools are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and are free.  The privatized housing just built a beautiful center that has a pool with a splash pad in the Slocum housing area, however, you can only use this pool if you live in base housing.

In Development:  The base is currently building a skate park, batting cages and a 400 meter track.

McDonalds: Recently remodeled and now has a game station for the kids, flat screen TVs and lot of rooms to sit. The drive through on paydays is really slow, plan on a 10-15 minute wait.

Other food on base: The Roadhouse, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Subway, Miller’s Landing, Starbucks, New City Deli, 11th Frame Grill inside the bowling alley, or Wing’s Grill located above the pro shop on Jackson drive, The Roadhouse Bar and The Shame inside the BOQ.
