Base housing and military rentals come with rules: no painting without permission, limits on nail holes, and a move-out inspection waiting at the end. But that does not mean your house has to feel temporary. With a few renter-friendly upgrades, you can make any set of quarters feel like home and take everything with you at your next PCS.
1. Lighting That Changes the Mood
Military housing often comes with basic overhead fixtures. Warm lamps make a huge difference. Try plug-in wall sconces that need no hardwiring, smart LED bulbs you can dim from your phone, or under-cabinet LED light bars for a dark kitchen.
2. Wall Decor Without the Damage
Use picture-hanging strips for lightweight frames, or lean a large floor mirror against the wall to brighten a room. A peel-and-stick wallpaper accent wall can add personality, but check your housing office’s rules and test a small spot first.
3. Rugs to Warm Up Hard Floors
Many newer base homes have vinyl plank floors. A good washable area rug adds warmth, reduces noise, and protects the floor. Add a non-slip rug pad so it stays put.
4. Curtains and Blackout Shades
Housing-issued blinds are functional but rarely pretty. A tension curtain rod needs no drilling, and blackout curtains are a must for shift workers and kids’ rooms.
5. Storage That Moves With You
Closet space varies wildly from one base to the next. Freestanding storage adapts to any floor plan: cube storage organizers, over-the-door organizers, and under-bed storage bins all pack flat or double as moving containers.
6. Kitchen Upgrades
Swap in drawer organizers, add a rolling kitchen cart for extra counter space, and use shelf risers to double cabinet space.
7. A Military Family Command Center
Deployments, school schedules, and PCS deadlines are easier when everyone can see them. A magnetic dry-erase calendar on the fridge or a wall-mounted mail and key organizer by the door keeps your household on track.
8. Outdoor Space
Many on-base homes include a patio or fenced yard. Solar string lights, a few folding patio chairs, and self-watering planters turn it into an extra room. Check your community’s yard rules before adding anything permanent.
Before You Upgrade: Check the Rules
Every privatized housing company and landlord has its own policies. Before making changes, ask the housing office what is allowed and get approvals in writing. When it is time to leave, return everything to its original condition. Our move-in and move-out inspection guide covers what inspectors look for.
